How does it all begin?

Two players to the left of the dealer are responsible for putting out blind bets. The player sitting on the left-hand side of the dealer is the small blind, while the player two to the dealer’s left puts out the big blind, that is twice as much as the small blind.

How do you deal?

Every player is allocated two cards, face down. These are also called hole or pocket cards. The first move falls on the player to the left of the big blind. They can either call the blind raise it or fold. The size of a raise should be twice the size of the bet preceding it, the maximum number entirely depends on whether you are playing with a definite or no-limit betting structure. Betting happens around the table in a clockwise pattern.

What is a flop?

After the betting round is over, three cards are dealt face up in the center of the table, that is known as the board. The first three cards in Texas Hold’Em are called the flop. These cards are also referred to as “community cards” as everyone can use all of them in combination with their own hole cards to make the best hand.

What happens towards the end?

  1. From the flop on, betting happens with the player who is placed on the left-hand side of the dealer who can check or bet. The players should either check or bet if no one has done that, if someone has already done that then the player should call, raise or fold.
  1. A fourth card is dealt face up on the board. It is known as a fourth street or the turn card.
  1. Another round of betting happens.
  2. The final card is dealt face up. This card is popularly known as a fifth street or the river.
  3. A final round of betting occurs. The final round of players show their cards and the one who makes the best of the five card hand by merging their pocket cards with cards on the board wins the game.
Note: In exceptional circumstances in Texas Hold’em, the five cards making up the board will actually be the best hand, in that case, everyone left in the hand divides up the poker.
  1. The deal passes to the next player to the left (who was small blind last hand) and a new hand is dealt
